Frequently Asked Questions
Where's the ball then?
There isn't one. Instead you stop a player called a jammer on the opposing team from lapping you, which is how points are scored in roller derby. See our explanation of the rules here.
Can I wear Rollerblades®?
Firstly, Rollerblade® is a registered trademark. You're thinking of inline skates where the wheels are lined up. For safety reasons, roller derby is exclusively played on quad roller skates, two back and two front wheels for stability.
What's up with the names and numbers?
A skate name has been part of roller derby culture for a long time. Many players choose to play under a skate name, usually a humorous pun around their name, or a persona (much like professional wrestling). As the sport evolves, we're seeing more players use their given name.
Your number is the important factor for game purposes. Players may select up to four digits as their unique number, so long as no one else in the league has taken it.
